18. lauf rund um den fühlingersee, cologne

it was grey & cloudy. i didn't even know how to get there. luckily there was someone boarding the bus that had a championchip on his running shoe. just follow that guy. even though i've taken down the bus-stop name, where i should alight, the guy didn't move at all. i've decided to just keep quiet and follow him!

finally the guy alighted. i followed him. this run is held at the fühlingersee rowing regatta 1998 world championship. the halfmarathon started at 10:40 a.m. 850 runners took part in this event. it was supposed to be as a preparation for the coming cologne marathon on the 8th october. before this event, other running distances such as 1 km, 5 km and 10 km as well as 8 km nordic walking was also integrated in this sunday event organised by the llg80 running group. all in all 1228 participants took part.

before the start, it was announced that due to the relatively high humidity, runners should keep drinking at every water-points to avoid any dehydration. "great", i thought. high humidity, a good training ground for my coming singapore marathon in december. anyway, all the participants gathered behind the starting line except me, i stood about 5 m before the starting line at the side to watch the fast & eager runners to blast off. almost 2 minutes later, i started to cross over the mat to begin my halfmarathon journey around the fühlinger see.

my strategy was not to run fast cos i want to save energy for next week berlin marathon. so i started really slowly. almost 27+ mins for the first 5 km. that was perfect. then my tempo began to increase as the distance gets longer. i found out later with my own watch that i managed to run 5 mins faster for the second 10 km compared to the first. wow, that was fun. the whole run was all about overtaking. i just love it.

well, in the end, the targeted time of 1:57 hrs wasn't met at all. i was much faster than that :-). hopefully there'll be no side-effect for next week - the berlin marathon!
