31. süderelbe halbmarathon, hamburg

it was the worst running condition i've ever experienced. on top of that, all the stress that had been lingering around since a couple of days didn't cheer me up. i wasn't in any great form to begin with. my day started as follows :

i was busy with work till late in the wee hours cos the project has to be submitted on monday (pressure! pressure!). at 2:30 am i've decided to call it a day/night. then i realised that today is the beginning of winter time, that means, the hour turns back an hour. at exactly 3 am the clock moves forward/backward to 2 am. my funkuhr (clock) was the first to bring "good" news to me - it just died at 2:58 am (low battery). and i couldn't find any aa battery at all in the middle of the night! wish i could turn back the clock (johnny hates jazz). just my luck. talking about luck, it also means that i have an extra hour to sleep tonight. wishful thinking. couldn't sleep well, not because that i'm nervous for the run later, it was just that my stomach was making a din. no such thing as carbo loading for me - i had eaten only 2 frozen tunafish croques last night cos of the damn work - no time to cooklah. anyway, i can't cook :-)!

woke up at 7:45 am and the weather was wonderful outside - lightning and thunderstorm. should i stay or should i go (clash)? ahhh... maybe the weather in southern elbe is better. so after the usual procedures, i packed up my stuffs and drove to harburg - a 25 km journey. i was right. the weather was better here, the sun shines.

runners running to the starting point

as i arrived, we were being marshalled to park our cars. great. as i stepped out of the car, my fear came smacking on my face - windy, very, very windy. urrggghhh... due to the sunshine most of the runners decided to wear short tights and t-shirt. i had my long tights and long-sleeve running t-shirt. i hate wind! even if i were to feel too warm, that could be a good training for the coming scsm. so went to the school hall to collect my bib number. it was like a family reunion, seeing all the familiar faces again and again. met my running mates in the hall and it seemed as if all of them weren't that eager to run in the windy situation.

at the start, a running mate asked me how fast do i want to run today? i told him i don't know and i won't be as fast as him anyway. he stills hallucinating that i could run at his tempo becos during interval trainings, he would always be overtaken by me (note : 200 - 400 m only). the start began at exactly 10 am. i had my mp3 (as usual) to guide me through the run. it was okay for the first 3 km and i thought that i ran a bit too fast for the start. after catching up with one of my running mate, we began running together for the next 4 km. each and everytime that we overtook someone, that person hanged behind us (if he could) and sometimes do the leading. at 6 km point, we were a bunch of 7 guys and a lady running together.

running at this area (orchard) was an adventure. the orchard is few hundreds years old already (or was it thousand?) and it is the biggest in europe. the asphalt path is almost impossible. with lobangs almost everywhere, you have to be careful not to sprained your legs or get stuck in horse dungs. and it is somehow slanted! you have to be alert. and the weather? just perfect - strong winds blowing either from the side or front.

the energy trying to run against the wind was enormous. apart from that, keeping pace with my colleague was not really a good idea cos at 7 km point i had to slow down a bit due to stitches. so i let my colleague and the rest ran away from me and did my own tempo till the turning point. fun thing was that you could see who's the first guy and his competitors. i gave thumbs up to all my other running mates (they were much faster than i was, well almost all :-)).

on way back my stitches were gone and i felt better. i started to put up a little tempo and managed to overtake a few. moment later, it started to drizzle and then poured heavily. wah... suey! i was wet, i hate it again! by the way, the wind was there all along, blowing from the sides and back. did i mention about the temperature? it was around 12° celsius. not to mention the slanting asphalt path! i soon caught up the lady from before and i decided to accompany her for a few kilometers. then she told me to go ahead but i wasn't able to run any faster! but i did run ahead, not because i'm faster, it was just that she slowed down.

for the last 4 km i managed to overtake only two person but stayed close to the guy in front of me. after 18 km point, i was gasping for oxygen. only 3.1 km to go, relax! i told myself. unfortunately, i couldn't find any km marks anymore, so i had to run blindly - follow the guy in front. es war wirklich zum kotzen! after turning left and right, i finally saw the letters 100 m to the finishing lines. right at the end, a young guy (18 yrs old) sprinted away and overtook the both of us. as i crossed the line, i stopped my stopwatch and was sooooo happy that i managed to do a sub 1:34 hr. i didn't realised that behind me were few guys and two ladies battling for the places, all within seconds from each other. who cares! i did it despite all these "bad" conditions.

alstering - waiting

14° celsius, dry and sunny. 17:39 (80 mins)

running with garmin forerunner 305 can get on your nerves at the start. locating satellites took such a long time. i was quite pissed. i just went on to run and after about more than 500 m from my "startpoint", the watch finally found its satellites. toll!

so i've decided to take a photo of my starting point. the day was getting dark soon even though it was just about 20 mins before six. i had to do my run now or i would be late for tonight's meeting at 19:30. i ran slowly towards alster and saw lots of joggers running around looking weirdly at me - yes, cos i wore long pants with double long sleeves running tops and a cap in such weather. well, a little bit of uncomfortability was okay cos the singapore marathon will be much, much hotter than this. did a slow round of alster and was a bit shock to see the time after i completed the round. it was just 15 mins before seven! i shifted to my higher gear and ran at a faster tempo on the way back. it was great to feel that the last few kilometers were a breeze - not a hard work. managed to arrived home minutes before seven.

hammer parking - leaves (me) alone

16° celsius, dry and slight wind. 18:43 (18 mins)

autumn is at its best. everywhere are red, yellow and golden brown leaves spread all over the place. my run to today was really nothing, just for the sake of running, no particular plan whatsoever. so i just ran to the hammer park and thought of doing some rounds in the stadium track. unfortunately, there was a football match today - no chance to run at the track. ran back home with just a meagre 3 km to finished of today.

alsteration - sunday walk

15° celsius, cloudy, sunny and windy. 10:38 (154 mins)

the alarm rang at 8 am. as usual, who wants to wake up that early! so i took a nap before i really woke up at 9:15 am. hmm... i'm so tired. after the shower, packed up my stuffs and drove to alster. it was 10:25 am.

wow, so many runners today. the mild weather did really motivate people to run. for my case, i have to run (i really need that mileage). after s hort stretching and warm up programme, i started to do my rounds. 4 rounds of alster - not boring, interesting in fact. you'll see all kinds of people this morning, joggers (what else), nordic walkers (i hate the sticks), dogs, tourists, bicyclists, fans waiting to see their star at le royal meridien hotel (who is it, i don't know), but the fans had to wait really long - 3 times i went passed (~2 hrs but the crowd is still there!) and of course the morning/afternoon bummers.

it was not fun at all when the battery from your mp3 suddenly went on strike after 3 km. though i've packed almost everything, the most important thing (battery) i left it at home. talking about murphy's law! so it was one of the most quiet run this season. urrgghhh....

like i said before, running during the weekend is a torture - especially if you started late. you just have to manouvre your run perfectly. almost kicked a dog for running in my way and a kid missed me by a hair with his bike. thanks to my quick reactions, nothing happened :-).

today's 4 rounds were a bit quicker than last week. but i don't feel it that quick though. must run slower but longer for my lsd next time.

alster and her boots.

running through these people needs a lot of concentration and patience.

stadtparking - interval in the dark

16° celsius, dry and no wind. 19:25 (80 mins)

donnerstags, the interval day. such a nice day. unfortunately when the training starts, it was already dark. well, before the training, there was a small toast to celebrate the runners who did well in the northgerman halfmarathon championship last sunday. so, it was get drunk before you run!

today's training was 10 x 400 m downhill. urrgghhh... how i hate downhill. luckily, it was just a slight slope, but that also mean that we have to run up to the starting point again! few new runners joined our training tonight. as usual, they were fast but only for the first 2 - 3 "laps". then the usual suspects "took over" the pace and remained fast till the last lap. i did few fast and not so fast laps. it was fun running with people who have the speed as you do and we pushed each other to the limit, not forgetting to joke around as well at the end of each lap. it was a combination of relax, tough and fun training.

alsteration - dicker, hast du eine zigarette

13° celsius, slightly cloudy but very windy. 16:35 (109 mins)

i started my run today directly after i walked out the main house door. slowly, i ran across the road towards the direction of alster, passing through the small park in borgfelde, berliner tor, the hamburger university of applied sciences, st georg hospital and finally reaching the alster.

two rounds of alster. i did a so-called fartlek. did some part of the route in high tempo and the other in slower jog. the second round was really tough. at the beginning of second round, a guy overtook me and left me behind for about 100 m. then i started my tempo, slowly meter by meter i closed up on him and finally running abreast with him. he wouldn't let me overtake him and keeping hard to run with me. as i'm already on my tempo, i didn't slow down, just maintaining my speed. since that guy still next to me, i turned on my gear and sped up. he was left behind, couldn't follow me. 200 m later, i slowed down and moment later, came the guy behind me. by then i already on my jogging mode and he ran past me. looked like that guy was not very happy! who cares - he's in first round and i already ran more than 10 km.

ran back and had my shower. was very hungry. took off to kfc at the reeperbahn, a red-light district. i had a quick 3-chicken meal before i left kfc. outside a drunken homeless guy asked me, "dicker, hast du eine zigarette?" (fatty, do you have a cigarette). even that guy could see i am fat. i was very "offended" :-)

hammer parking - wind tracking

14° celsius, slightly cloudy with strong wind. 18:35 (40 mins)

it has been quite awhile ever since i ran around the hammer park track. even though today is tempo run day, i've decided not to go cos most of the runners have had either their half- or full marathon yesterday. i don't think that there will be a really tempo training, the most will be (again!) regenerative run. a waste of time for me.

so after i cycled to the hammer park stadium, i did a short warm-up of 4 rounds running around the track. after a short break, i began my own interval(!) run. 3 x 1000 m i decided to do today. how i hate running around the track. the wind, the wind and the wind really pissed me off. the stadium lights were only switched on at the home straight, thus i've to run in the "dark" half of the way until almost to the end, when the football team came for practice. then it was okay.

anyway, i didn't feel quite right during the run. i felt tired. no energy and no motivation. did the intervals in 4:05 mins, 3:53 mins and 3:53 mins, all in the 2nd lane cos the first lane is "closed". i was so drained. finally ran 5 laps on the 7th lane to warm down.

alsteration - lsd with speed

12° celsius, very cloudy and strong wind. 11:05 (158 mins)

set the alarm clock at 8 am but decided to give it a pass. woke up in shock when the clock showed 10:20 am. gee, i wanted to do my long slow distance today, with 4 rounds of the alster (á 7.4 km).

it was quite "empty" today around the lake. i guessed it must be the weather. just blame it on the weather. i started running slowly at the beginning, without doing any stretching whatsoever - a premier in my alstering.

alsteration - total kaputt

14° celsius, slight wind and hazy. 17:20 (42 mins)

what a day today. i'm totally kaputt. i can't even run properly around the alster, it is something like a fartlek, at times running in high speed and others slow and gemütlich. i have to save my energy for the next event - badminton, which i played for 2.5 hours non-stop.

thanks to my alcoholfreies alster und that delicious philadelphiatorte, i finally regain my energy (well, actually fat) :-).

alstering

aussenalster. my favourite place to run.

the alster is a 53 km long tributary of the river elbe in northern germany. it has its source in henstedt-ulzburg in schleswig-holstein, approximately 25 km north of hamburg. the alster flows roughly southwards and reaches the elbe in hamburg, which was founded on its shore. in the centre of hamburg the alster has been dammed since 1190, originally to power a watermill. in 1235 a further dam was built for a second mill, which changed the form of the river to be like a lake. the alster forms two artificial lakes within the city limits of hamburg, the larger called außenalster (outer alster) and the smaller binnenalster (inner alster). the size of the außenalster is 1.6 km2. today these lakes and the surrounding parks serve as an important recreational area in the heart of the city.

the phrase "outer" refers to the old city walls of hamburg. the außenalster was the part of the lake that was "outside" the city walls. today the old city walls do not exist, instead two car and train bridges, the lombardbrücke and the kennedybrücke, span the river.

the außenalster is used by the inhabitants of hamburg for recreational purposes such as sailing and rowing. almost all banks of the außenalster are public. the banks vary from a small strip of green to large public parks (e.g. the alstervorland). It is very popular to jog around the lake (approx. 7.4 km).

stadtparking - it gets dark too soon

16° celsius, dry and slight windy. 19:00 (12.6 km)

today's tempo run was all about regeneration. then why are we doing this tempo run? the main topic for today was about anina's achievement during her cologne's marathon run. she clocked a remarkable 3:19 hrs, a slash of about 20 mins from her previous marathon. she ran without a watch - duh! if not she could be much faster. a year ago, she was as quick as i was but now i'm the one lagging behind :-(

anyway, after the compulsory warming up run (2.5 km), we started to do our 5 km tempo run. the faster runners zoomed away and i did my run together with christian and jens-uwe together. a quarter way through, christian had to give up cos he said he had problem with his stomach. i suspected he overestimated himself cos i pushed a little bit hard at first. so it was me and jens-uwe running together the rest of the distance. even though i didn't give 100 % to the run, jens-uwe still managed to follow me with heavy breathing. man he had such a willpower. we ended up in 23 mins for the first round.

after a few minutes break i've decided to let jens-uwe to dictate the pace for the second round. this time it was quite a 'breeze' for me. all this while i'm trying to practice my chirunning-style. although a bit unusual the way i ran, somehow sometimes i did feel that there was not much energy needed to move forward. i'll practice more and try to integrate it in my next run. by the way, we did some high-speed running at the end of the second round and managed to complete it in 25 mins.

wow, i wonder what happens to my legs tomorrow after the 30 km yesterday?

alsteration - slalom run

17° celsius, very cloudy and windy. 15:20 (29.6 km - 167 mins)

yesterday lotto was valued at 35 million euro. i wonder who's the lucky person. i definitely didn't win it!

finally i manage to run today. after the long wait (due to stormy and windy weather this week) i went out to my favourite lake to run. as usual the path around the lake was fully "crowded" with people doing their weekends stroll. couldn't blame them since today's weather was halfway okay.

running around the lake during weekends is always an adventure. you can never run straight forward, cos there's always (unforeseen) barriers in front of you, be it dogs, kids, bicycles, kids with bicycles, kids with ice-cream, adult with ice-creams, adult stopping immediately to kiss, dogs sniffing each other, runners greeting non-runners, non-runners blocking the paths, cyclists swerving infront of you and etc, the lists go on. this was my first run around the lake since 20th september, the day that my bike was stolen. i still miss it though, and i'm going to beat that person up if i found out whoever stole my precious.

anyway, back to the run. as stated above, it was not easy to run during the weekends. i started slowly and my intention was that today i'm going to do my first(?) lsd. i'm going to run 4 rounds (7.4 km per round), so that it will bring a total of almost 30 km. i don't know how my legs will take it 2 weeks after the marathon. so slowly i ran. after every round i stopped by my car and drank the fluids that i brought from home. stopped for a minute and then continue with the running. i almost gave up after the 3rd round cos it was about to rain and my legs were a bit heavy. the final round i did it really slowly and was happy to complete my first continuous 4 rounds of alster this year! the legs were like metal as i drove back home.

just read an article about sina von kocemba, a 11 years old german shepherd, who did her 200+ ultra/marathon last sunday. she must be the only marathon experienced dog in the world. respect! together with her running buddy, rosemarie von kocemba, a 100-marathon club member, they did a 51.8 km (7 rounds) of the aussenalster. both ladies came in together in a time of 5:22:07 hours.

some of us can only dream about completing the marathon!

stadtparking - tempo running without tempo

altogether there were 7 of us today doing the tempodauerlauf. my left oberschenkel/peha/thigh still having that muscle sore from the friday's treppenlauf. we started doing a 2.5 km warm-up run. everything was fine till then cos we ran at a very slow pace. the first 5 km tempo was not really a tempo run cos most of us have had something (a run, competition, lsd etc) during the weekends. we completed the first round in 28+ mins, not really a tempo, more likely a regenerative run. as two of us decided to call it a day, the rest of us went for our second round. this time the pace was comfortable at first but it got faster and faster towards the end. i was almost out of breath but thanks to henning (i had to keep my pace as fast as his) and norbert (for accompanying and pushing me for the last km), i managed to hold up the high speed till the end. wow. that was tiring but at the same time i felt great.

my very first tempo run this year - a bit too late isn't it whereby the season almost coming to an end.
